What My Little Girl Can Teach You About Life and Why Adults Suck

Why do 90% of Grade 2 kids say they’re creative, while 90% of Grade 12 kids say they’re not creative?
Why do 4 yr. olds laugh 300 times a day, while adults only laugh 15 times a day?
Why do adults suck?
What happens to us when we grow up?
Where does our creativity go?
Why don’t we laugh like we used to?
This past week I was inspired by my little girl, I hope her story will inspire you to find your lost creativity, to re-ignite your passion, and to laugh more… lots more :D

MERSAYDES AND HER LITTLE TREE

Mersaydes is 6 years old and she is in Grade 1. Throughout the year she has been learning about keeping our planet clean and healthy.
This is something she instantly became very passionate about.  She constantly reminds us to recycle, and always picks up litter everywhere she goes.
In her words “Daddy, look what someone did, they littered… I hate litterbugs”
The other day when I picked Mersaydes up from school, she was bubbling with uncontainable excitement.  She had a baby pine tree to plant.
I loved the note she wrote me, and the picture she drew of her getting ready to plant her tree, but what inspired me was what she said…

She said… well screamed actually… “I can’t believe I am going to save the planet!”
Instantly, because I’m an adult, and because I suck, my thought was… “Well one little tree won’t really have an affect, but this will be fun.”
Then my heart slapped my brain and I realized that Mersaydes is absolutely right: She IS going to save the planet!

EVEN SMALL ACTIONS HAVE BIG EFFECTS

One of my favorite quotes is from Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Because we are adults, and because we suck we have bought in and accepted that we are meaningless, that we are small, that we are insignificant.
We say things like: “What can I really do? What effect can I really have? After all, I’m just one person.”
So we give up before we even try.

ONE GIRL, 4 BILLION TREES

As adults, who suck, we have traded in our creative thinking for logical thinking.
We look at the fact that 4 billion trees are cut down each year, and scoff at one little girl planting one little tree.  1 tree to make up for 4 billion cut down?  That little girl is cute an all, but she’s really not doing anything.
You’re wrong! I’m wrong! We’re all wrong!

A VERY POWERFUL SECRET

That cute little girl is doing something amazing!  Because of her passion, and untainted beliefs, she truly believes she is saving the planet.
That belief inspired me, I’m sharing her inspiring story with all of you, and hopefully many of you will keep sharing it.
The potential is that hundreds of thousands of people can be inspired by her, and take action.
Maybe some of you will plant trees, or start recycling, or pick up litter.
Even if only one other person plants a tree – she has had an effect that is bigger than her.

CREATIVITY FUELED BY PASSION

Mersaydes loves to draw and a few months ago she drew me a picture of an invention.
She drew me what she was going to invent when she grew up.
She drew a picture of giant robot vacuum that can suck up all the garbage littered on the world.
Again, because I am a sucky adult, my logical, cynical brain started immediately coming up with all the reasons why that idea would never work.
What you would do if a friend or co-worker came up to you with that idea?
You would probably think he’d gone crazy, or maybe you would be upset that he didn’t share what he was smoking.
But I’m missing the point, we all are!
Mersaydes is very passionate about the environment and very creative.  That combination of passion and creativity came up with an awesome idea!
The point isn’t whether or not you could actually build a giant robot vacuum big enough to suck up all the garbage on the world, and what the robot would do with the garbage once it sucked it up.
The point is that if I don’t screw things up with her, and am able to foster her passion and her creativity and protect her from all the cynicism and negativity of the World she will grow up to do amazing things.

DON’T LET YOUR KIDS GROW UP TO BE SUCKY ADULTS

While I would love to be able to protect Mersaydes from all the bad things in the World, I know that’s not realistic.
So while I can’t protect her from the World, I CAN change the World.
How can I change the World? How can you change the World?
It’s actually really easy.
My favorite Michael Jackson song is “Man in the Mirror” and my favorite lyric from the song is: “If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change.”
To change the World, just change yourself.
Start with changing your thoughts, this will change your actions, and eventually change your habits.
Your actions will inspire others to change, and their actions will inspire others, and so on…
But, it’s even easier…
That’s because I’m not challenging you to think like a different person, I am challenging you to think like the little person you once were.
